Friday 10: Going up or going down?
Life can be such a pain in the butt
Last week we had seven correct identifications from four players: Mike, Sidney, Jordan, & Bubs. The game was posted a little late — not happening again this week! By next Friday I should be in my own time zone, though.
Two of the unidentified songs were fairly old. Robert Parker’s “Barefootin’” was a #2 hit in 1966. It was also on heavy rotation on my tiny ladybug-shaped record player when I was about seven years old.
“Blueberry Hill” is quite a bit older. First recorded by Sammy Kaye in the 1940s, it was also recorded by the Glen Miller Orchestra, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, and (of course) Fats Domino.
I don’t think there are any songs that reach quite that far back, but to make up for it some of these were actually released in the 2000s.
In case you need a reminder, here are the rules for the game:
- Post your guesses in the comments. Provide both the artist and the title.
- No fair searching.
- Covers are accepted if I can find them. (It’s surprising how often hit songs are covers, actually.)
Good luck!
Update
It’s about 24 hours before I post the new set, and we have only four of these identified. Here are some hints (and I’ve expanded the lyrics a bit).
#1: One of the biggest hits by this artist — who recently killed his alter-ego.
#2: Although this song sounds like a disco tune from the 1970s, it’s much newer (and produced by Mark Ronson of “Uptown Funk” fame)
#4: Less of a cover than it is an adaptation of another song in this list.
#5: Hit #1 on the rap chart and made it pretty far up the Billboard Top 100. You will recognize the chorus, as well as a prominent — arguably grating — repetitive sample.
#6: Was included on two albums, one named after a kind of tree and the other named after an extinct bird. The artist was the lead singer for an 80s one-hit wonder.
#8: This “love it or hate it” song covered by another artist (or band) in this list, but then subjected to an even more saccharine cover a few years later.
